Decorating Tips and How to Create a Moodboard

When decorating a room there are many things to consider - for example are you keeping any existing pieces of furniture or soft furnishings that will affect your choices of fabrics or paint colours.

If you do not have any restrictions and can choose whatever fabrics and colours that you want this may seem exciting but it can be difficult to know where to start.

Firstly you need to be clear of the purpose of the room and who will be using it, does it need to be practical to take account of children and pets or will it be mainly an adults only area.

Next consider the style and ambience you want to create, is it a romantic bedroom, Truly tasteless jokes a country style kitchen or perhaps a dramatic dining room. Do you prefer a cool contemporary style or a cosy country cottage style look.

Think about the colours you want to use - do you want to use an energising colour such as yellow, a calming green or dramatic red. You need to consider how the colour you choose will work in your room bearing in mind the orientation and natural light in the room, for example certain blues will make a room feel cold in a north facing room.

When you have considered the points above you can start looking for fabric, furniture and flooring. Start by collecting samples, swatches and pictures of things you may want to use and create a moodboard. I like selecting my fabrics first, particularly important if you are using patterned fabrics. You can always get paints mixed to the exact shade you want to match the fabric, it's not always easy to find a fabric to match a paint colour.

Remember if you are using more than one fabric and mixing patterns it is best to match a small and medium sized print or a medium and large sized print but be careful if using a small and a large print and this does not always work. Stripes or checks are ideal for mixing with floral prints particularly if you want to create a relaxed feel to a room. Obtain swatches of fabric and any trims you may want to use - for example you may want to add fringing to a pelmet.

When you have selected your fabrics, decide which colours you are going to use from it as your base colour for the walls and/or flooring. This will be your main colour and you should aim for using about 70% of this colour in your scheme in order to get a balanced looking room. Get a tester pot of paint and paint a piece of card in this colour to act as the background for your moodboard. If possible also get a sample of the carpet or flooring you are using, this will also add texture to your board.

Finally you need an accent colour, this is usually a brighter or bolder colour than the rest of your scheme and you only need to use a little of it to bring your scheme to life. Choose one of the more vivid colours from your fabric, reds, bright lime greens and zingy oranges are right on trend at the moment and work really well as an accent colour. Use this colour for accessories such as vases, artwork and perhaps for a couple of plain cushions. If wanted you could also use this colour for a statement piece of furniture such as a chair.

You could also use pictures of furniture you want to include, this could be photos you have taken or images from a brochure.

Paste all of your collected pieces onto your moodboard so that you can see what they all look like together. Take it into the room that you are decorating then you will also get a sense of how it will work with the light in the room. Creating a moodboard also gives you an opportunity to try different colours and fabrics. If you do this before purchasing any large items you can avoid making costly mistakes and you will end up with a room that you will enjoy living in.
